Radon: What is it?

Radon is a cancer-causing odorless, tasteless, naturally occurring, radioactive noble gas that is formed from the decay of radium. And its presence in your home can pose a real danger to you and your family's health.  Radon in St. Louis is formed from the normal radioactive decay of uranium.

Radon is easy and inexpensive to test for in your home.  If you are concerned that your home may have Radon, contact us and we'll explain how to test it.  And if your home has a radon level of 4 pCi/L or more, Green Radon and Remodeling can explain how and when we'll remove it for you using a Radon Mitigation System.

Radon: Where does it come from?

Radon gas comes from natural sources and can accumulate in your home, especially in confined areas such as basements or crawl spaces. Radon is responsible for the majority of public exposure to radiation. It is often the single largest contributor to an individuals background radiation dose, and is certainly the most variable from location to location.

Typical geometric standard deviations found in studies range between 2 and 3, meaning that the radon concentration is expected to be more than a hundred time the mean concentration for 2 to 3% of the cases.  Depending on how your home is built and ventilated, radon concentrations may differ sightly.  The Midwest is know for its higher concentrations of Radon.  In fact, some cities have passed requirements for radon-resistant construction in new homes.
